President Biden is hosting a summit on democracy on Thursday and Friday - something he promised during his campaign for office. The gathering will be virtual because of pandemic risks.

The White House wants to boost global commitments to human rights and fighting corruption. But as the summit convenes, American democracy itself is under pressure.
